Star-Studded Auburn Show Choir Showdown Highlights Another Week of Southern Show Choir

This next weekend of show choir looks to be another great one, with what seems to the be the Southern competition of the year taking place along with two other solid events. Auburn looks to be star-studded and too good to be true for show choir fans across the nation. The Magnolia Invitational holds improved rematches and returning groups. The Music City Show Choir Invitational offers a tight “Southskirts” event. Come along with us as we break down as much as we can on this filled weekend!

Auburn Show Choir Showdown

Man, where do I even begin with this one? Undoubtedly the competition of the year. Auburn has six groups at the top of this event that are all capable of winning a Grand Championship anywhere else if the roster wasn’t this stacked. And that’s not even including the handful of single-gender groups that could easily do the same.

Homewood enters fresh off an impressive Grand Championship win over Avon. Petal comes in with a Grand Championship already secured and two full weeks to fine-tune. Oak Mountain is stepping into its third straight heavyweight matchup (having already faced Clinton, Franklin Central, North Central, etc.), and the competition here is no lighter. Grenada is looking to steady the ship after an unfortunate sequence of events before finals at JASI that cast a shadow over their season. Briarwood feels like an underdog on paper, despite already owning a Grand Championship over one of these contenders. And Spain Park might be the most improved group of the year, chasing what could be their first Grand Championship. Then you look at the main treble groups: Oak Mountain, Homewood, and Petal are as strong as ever and absolutely capable of knocking one or two mixed groups out of finals. There is so much to track at this event that it’s almost overwhelming.

The middle division looks deep, but Homewood stands out early. In small division, Oxford looks to be the team to beat. And as for the top three single-gender groups mentioned earlier? Truly anyone’s guess. I could keep going, but the more we break it down, the more possibilities open up. We’ll just have to sit back and watch this one unfold.

Oak Grove Magnolia Invitational

One state over, we have the Oak Grove Magnolia Invitational, where we’ll get a rematch of a matchup earlier in the season between Brandon and West Jones. The difference this time? West Jones seems to be much improved. Since their loss against Brandon, they’ve earned their second Grand Championship on the year and took down Homewood. Brandon themselves have also won two Grand Championships on the year, only losing to groups like Clinton, Carmel, Franklin Central, Gretna, etc. Aside from those two, we also have two groups competing that had to drop out from last weekend’s events: Biloxi and Northwest Rankin. I’m particularly interested to see how Northwest Rankin stacks up against the likes of Brandon and West Jones.

For the second weekend in a row, we get a 2A divisional matchup between Sumrall, Pearl River Central, and South Jones, where South Jones will look to repeat their win from last week. The 1A tier looks to be much more competitive as West Marion enters as the favorite, closely followed by Clinton Christian Academy and Pisgah (who had a tight bout this past weekend where Clinton Christian Academy came out ahead of Pisgah). The single gender division is no different, with treble groups from Brandon, Northwest Rankin, and Biloxi looking early to claim the division. Treble groups from Briarwood and Purvis round out the division and look to upset the previously mentioned three.

Donelson Christian Academy Music City Show Choir Invitational

Rounding out the weekend is a smaller competition held in Nashville. While maybe not as star-studded as the other two events, this competition is sure to be tight. It looks early to be between Bradley Central and Enterprise for the Grand Champion title. Appling County makes their season debut here though, so they could end up being a wild card and spoiling the previously mentioned groups’ plans. The middle division is rounded out by Cleveland, and the small division features Heritage Christian Academy and Rome, with Rome expected to be the favorite.
