Expectations were high for the Cosby Titan Tournament of Choirs due to the incredible out-of-state forces that were taking to the stage, and they did not disappoint. After an early morning of competition, eight womens choirs eagerly awaited results to see who earned the top spot. After all was said and done, West Virginia’s Hurricane Heat Wave took home their most impressive win of the season. Heat Wave, led by director Joseph Kincaid, is made up of 61 singer/dancers, 39 of which had never performed before this season, making their results even more admirable. Hurricane’s womens choir also picked up Best Choreography for the third time this season.

Heat Wave was able to edge out not only Petal Innovations who was in their division, but also Douglas S. Freeman Harmony in Motion from the medium division who, to the surprise of many, took home best overall vocals for the treble division. Unsurprisingly, DFS took home the highest honor in their division, knocked off three other choirs who were looking to pull an upset, and produced the second highest overall score. Powhatan Radiance also picked up their second straight win in the small division over the Belles of Amherst and will continue their quest for a perfect four-for-four season.

As the clock passed noon, the competition began to warm up like the weather outside. The small mixed division was composed of six different choirs, two of which were making their season debut. Speaking of season debuts, it doesn’t get much better than how Glen Allen Vocal Eclipse executed theirs when they won the division over two other choirs who had already taken home a first this season as well. Furthermore, Terrell Dean and Powhatan capped off their strong weekend when their mixed choir, Resonance, took home gold in the medium division.

Prior to awards being handed out, three more choirs representing the large mixed division still had to prove who was worthy of winning the grand championship title. Matoaca High Impact, who was coming off the back of their own grand championship at their lone competition three weeks prior, was looking to repeat, but two stiff competitors stood in their way. Hurricane Red Hot, who also had momentum following two wins themselves, were looking to build and win their third straight title. The last choir with their hat in the mix was Petal Soundsations, who despite being known for the great placements, had struggled this season and were looking to rebound in their last competition. After all three choirs rocked the stage, the scores and captions were very close. Red Hot snagged vocals, show design, and band, but it wasn’t enough to knock off Soundsations, who took choreo and the overall win for their second this season.

The Virginia season is now two-thirds of the way done and after an amazing weekend of star-studded competition at TTOC, show choir fans all across the country were intrigued by the results Cosby produced. Even though this competition will be hard to top due to the out-of-state talent, the Manchester Koste Classic this weekend will see the regional’s best go at it once again.

Before the mixed choirs perform on Saturday, the womens choirs will take to the stage and battle in their own divisions. The large division comprises two choirs, both of whom are looking for their first win of the season. Thomas Dale Knightingales, who have previously competed in the medium-sized division, made the jump up and will look to have a jump in the standings since they have placed second at their previous endeavors. They will be taking on City Lights from Midlothian High School, who have earned a second in addition to a third place this season, losing to only Cosby Rhapsody and Manchester Touch of Swing.

While the large division winner usually takes home the grand championship trophy also, the odds are favored for another choir at this competition, Douglas S. Freeman Harmony in Motion. As previously noted, DSF just beat out Petal Innovations and overtook Hurricane Heat Wave for vocals at last weekend’s TTOC. While three other choirs will take their shot at dethroning Harmony in Motion, it would take some heroic efforts to knock off this choir in their last competition of the season. If they are able to bring home the title, it would be the second straight perfect season for this group under fellow two-year tenured director Madi Gilleland.

Speaking of undefeated seasons, Powhatan Radiance will have to outperform three other choirs in the small division to keep the win streak alive. Radiance has already beaten two of their competitors in Massaponax Decibelles and Mechanicsville New Horizons earlier in the season, but the Decibelles have earned a win of their own since the Commonwealth Choral Invitational. One other fun note to watch on Friday is the first bass division battle for a Virginia competition in recent memory. Atlee Debonair, who has competed in the small division the past few seasons, finally has some competition with debuting choir MidBROthian (hat tip to the name) from Midlothian. It will be entertaining for Virginia fans to finally be treated to a battle that is normally reserved for strictly the larger circuits.

On Saturday, it will be time for the mixed choirs to show off their talents. The day will kick off with an almost unfathomable amount of small division choirs competing. Nine different groups will be in pursuit of the top spot and seek to add a check in their win column. This division also features choirs from three different states (Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina) and two choirs making their season debut. Glen Allen Vocal Eclipse, who won last week, will look to repeat but choirs such as Poquoson Evolution, Hanover Sound FX, and James River Current Edition will be hot on their heels. All the choirs from this division have struggled to find consistency in 2026, leading to many chaotic results. At least one choir will be able to pull ahead this weekend, as someone will wind up at the top of the standings.

Moving up one division to the medium mixed, six groups will perform, but expect a two-horse race for the top spot. Clover Hill New Dimensions and Powhatan Resonance will duke it out as they both compete for the final time this competitive year. New Dimensions, who swept Powhatan earlier this year, has since traveled out-of-state twice where they placed second and third in finals at the respective competitions. On the other hand, Powhatan has gained some steam as they won their last outing and earned a second before that. Thomas Dale Knight Scene and Mechanicsville Madz are two other choirs to keep an eye out for from this bunch.

The evening will come to a close highlighting three large mixed choirs. Matoaca High Impact, who placed third at TTOC last weekend, will look to repeat their Mid-Atlantic Show Choir Spectacular performance where they took home the prestigious grand championship title at Virginia’s earliest competition. They won’t have an easy path, however, as Midlothian Just For Show and Kecoughtan Harbor Lights impede their smooth sailing to the top. Just For Show in particular could prove to be a challenge for High Impact, because despite placing behind them at Clover Hill, they took home Best Vocals and Best Choreography. Expect this battle to be very close with high chances either choir could take home the top spot.

With the sun quickly setting on the horizon for the 2026 Virginia circuit, all the groups competing at this weekend’s Koste Classic will look to either cap off, or build on their previous success from earlier in the season.
