The Virginia scene is halfway done with their 2026 competition circuit which calls for a deeper look into how the choirs have done so far this season. While exact rankings are impossible to make on such a creative and subjective form of art, they are nevertheless fun and can prove how hard choirs have worked in the offseason.

Large Mixed

  1. Cosby "Spotlight"

  2. Matoaca "High Impact"

  3. Midlothian "Just For Show"

  4. Manchester "Capital Swing"

  5. Kecoughtan "Harbor Lights"

To no one’s surprise, Cosby Spotlight once again looks to be atop the Virginia scene. After a first comp without a placement at the Chesterton Trojan Classic, Spotlight quickly regained its footing and was able to bring home back-to-back grand championships when returning to the Commonwealth. Cosby will look to cap off a perfect in-state season when they close the curtain at the Powhatan Diamond Classic. Despite only competing in one competition so far this season, Matoaca High Impact was able to take home a grand championship at Clover Hill while besting all three choirs ranked below them. High Impact will return to the stage this weekend at the Cosby Titan Tournament of Choirs but will be up against some stiff out-of-state opponents. Just For Show and Capital Swing have also been right in the mix of this division during this season and have the potential to upset a higher-ranked choir any day of the week.

Medium Mixed

  1. Clover Hill "New Dimensions"

  2. Powhatan "Resonance"

  3. Mechanicsville "Madz"

  4. Atlee "Illusion"

  5. Mills E. Godwin "Debut"

Coming off of their medium mixed win and sweep at the Thomas Dale CCI, Clover Hill New Dimensions followed it up with a second overall in finals at the Cabell Midland Invitational this past weekend. With two more opportunities to perform this season, including another out-of-state voyage, New Dimensions look to be poised and in a prime position to finish the season as the best of the bunch from the second division on the card. The choirs ranked from spots two through four have been jockeying for the best placement with one another all season. Madz won the matchup over Resonance at the Mid-Atlantic Show Choir Spectacular, but Powhatan got their revenge at CCI where Illusion also found their way smushed between the two. The medium mixed scene has always been unpredictable in the Virginia scene and it looks to be that way once again.

Small Mixed

  1. James River "Current Edition"

  2. Poquoson "Evolution"

  3. Hanover "Sound FX"

  4. Amherst County "Amherechos"

All the choirs listed about have only competed one this season, making this group very difficult to rank. Despite this, earlier in the year when Current Edition, Sound FX, and the Amherechos all squared off against one another at Thomas Dale, James River’s small mixed choir was able to get the job done and sweep the competition. When Poquoson Evolution competed they were the only choir in their division, but had a clean, well-executed show and will look to earn their first win of the season when all four of these groups meet this weekend.

Large Womens

  1. Cosby "Rhapsody"

  2. Manchester "Touch of Swing"

  3. Midlothian "City Lights"

This is one of the easier divisions to rank as all the choirs have been face to face in the heat of competition at least twice this season. Rhapsody has rather comfortably been able to win both matchups and will look to conclude yet another season of being undefeated in their home state. Manchester Touch of Swing was able to bring home a division grand championship as well when they overtook Midlothian City Lights with a sweep at the first competition of the year. On top of the fact that these three are already very familiar faces to one another, they are not done seeing each other in the 2026 season. One final matchup will highlight these three choirs when they conclude their seasons at the Powhatan Diamond Classic.

Medium Womens

  1. Douglas S. Freeman "Harmony in Motion"

  2. Atlee "Elegance"

  3. Thomas Dale "Knightingales"

  4. Clover Hill "Iridescence"

  5. James River "Anything Goes"

DSF Harmony in Motion picked up right where they left off last season and haven’t skipped a beat. Not only have they won the medium division at both competitions they competed in, they swept both times and have tallied up captions galore. Atlee’s womens choir

Elegance slots in at the two spot after coming second to HIM two weekends back at Thomas Dale CCI. Similarly, Thomas Dale Knightgales came in second place last weekend. With three more opportunities to compete this season, these choirs will continue to be a jumble to see who truly is the best in class in the Old Dominion.

Small Womens

  1. Powhatan "Radiance"

  2. Massaponax "Decibelles"

  3. Mechanicsville "New Horizons"

  4. Manchester "Vocal Swing"

  5. Amherst County "Belles of Amherst"

Since only a singular choir from this division competed at the first competition, there are only two weekends of results to rank these choirs from. Powhatan Radiance stepped up to bat and hit the home run the first time four of these choirs met when they took a division sweep at Thomas Dale. The following weekend, Massaponax Decibelles got their turn and picked up a sweep over Manchester Vocal Swing for their first win since the 2020 season. Similarly to other divisions, expect these choirs to continue to vie for the top spot as the season continues.
