News and Notes
Large Mixed Scramble
Several eye-catching results on Mar. 21 led to the entire back half of the large mixed rankings changing. Northwest Rankin, who had just made an appearance at tenth following a strong second at Biloxi, scored their first win of the season at Madison Central, vaulting them up to sixth. Grenada’s finals appearance at Show Choir Nationals propelled them from outside the rankings to seventh. Auburn’s loss to Uniondale at FAME America meant that Varsity Singers was more or less a casualty of those that saw more success this past weekend, with the group going from sixth to ninth.
Mens Group Momentum
It was a banner weekend for mens groups across the South. Northwest Rankin The Ambition made finals at Madison Central, beating their sister group Allure, Biloxi Sound Sirens, and Biloxi Sound Sailors to do so. Auburn Men at Work won the single-gender division at FAME America, beating their sister choir Elan to do so. Both are included in this week’s rankings. Biloxi Sound Sailors continue to grow as a second-year ensemble and received votes this week. (Tallassee Gold Edition, Tift County Tiftosterone, and Oak Mountain The Craftsmen, we miss you!)
Jackson Prep Revs It Up
In their first competitive appearance since Jan. 31 and only their second competition all season, Jackson Prep won the middle mixed division and advanced to finals at Madison Central, placing behind only the three large mixed groups at the competition. As such, they joined the rankings for the first time since Mar. 6, beating out Enterprise to do so.
Who’s Elite in Small Mixed?
The small mixed division at Brandon ELITE features fourth-ranked Clinton Christian, receiving-votes Pisgah, Pass Christian, and Morton. This will be the fourth matchup between CCA and Pisgah this season, and while Extreme is 3-0 in their meetings so far, Innergy has been a mere one spot behind each time. This will be Pass Christian’s last dance in small mixed before moving up to middle mixed next season. Throw Morton in for some additional spice, and it turns out there’s still a lot to settle before the season ends.
The next edition of Southern show choir rankings will be an expanded end-of-season rankings. It will not be published immediately after Brandon ELITE, so don’t fret – even more groups will be ranked and even more analysis will be coming in April.
