March 8th Southern Show Choir Preview

By Tony Holeman, Southern contributor

This week features two southern competitions and a traveling trio of programs. From the Gulf Coast to central Illinois, everyone has something to prove this weekend.

BILOXI GULF COAST CLASSIC

This weekend’s matinee event is being held on the Gulf Coast in the town of Biloxi, Mississippi. Per tradition, Clinton looks to sweep here against their main competition in the likes of Petal and Tupelo. Other than the top groups, this competition also holds a few hidden gems in the other divisions. In 2A, the headlining rematch is between South Jones and Northeast Jones, two groups who have gone 1 for 2 against the other to claim the spot as the best 2A group in the state of Mississippi. In 1A, West Marion and Pass Christian rematch after Pass Christian upset the former top 1A group at the Oak Grove Magnolia Invitational last weekend. The single-gender division provides a fun Tupelo versus Petal matchup. Full predictions are below:

Predictions (five finalists):

GC) Clinton “Attache” (Sweep)

1RU) Petal “Soundsations”

2RU) Tupelo “Synergy”

3RU) Madison Central “Reveille”

4RU) Petal “Innovations”

1st in 4A) Clinton “Attache”

1st in 2A) Northeast Jones “Gold Horizons”

1st in 1A) West Marion “New Era”

1st in Single Gender) Tupelo “Synergy”

TIFT COUNTY PEACH STATE INVITATIONAL

Over in the state of Georgia, Peach State is a competition full of an interesting mix of groups. With that being said, it looks like it’ll be a close race between Oxford, Rome, Tarpon Springs, and Lakeside for a Grand Championship title. Competition such as Tallassee, Appling County, and Opelika rounds out the event. As of now, Oxford looks like they could have a slight lead over the rest, but there is no way to know for certain what will happen here. Full predictions are below:

Predictions (no finals):

GC) Oxford “Sound” (Sweep)

1st in “Championship”) Tarpon Springs “Syndicated Sound”

1st in Small) Oxford "Sound"

1st in Single Gender) Tallassee “Divas”

OUT OF TOWN

This weekend’s out of town section includes three Southern programs travelling up north to Mount Zion, Illinois to compete at the Mt. Zion Midwest Invitational. Both Grenada and Brandon will be competing against the likes of Wheaton Warrenville South, Loveland, Troy Buchanan, and others for a Grand Championship title (Brandon will be bringing their girls group as well). Spain Park will also be making the trip up to compete in the lower tier against Troy Buchanan Soundwave. Good luck and safe travels to all the Southern Show Choir groups heading out this weekend!

Come right back here after the weekend is over for a dissection of all the results, whether they be chalk or upsets. Good luck to all the groups!
