Comps of the Week Recap: 2/1/25

Updated: Feb 5

By William Soquet, Editor-in-Chief

Homewood and Millard West took statement wins to start their seasons, while Hastings and Gretna East shot back up to the top of the standings.

Albertville Diamond Classic Results

Large Mixed: 1st) Homewood “The Network” (BV/BC/Overall Effect) 2nd) Enterprise “Encores” 3rd) Donelson Christian “Legacy”

Middle Mixed: 1st) Homewood “Continuum” (BC/Overall Effect) 2nd) Tift County “Eighth Street Singing Company” (BV) 3rd) Hoover “Paradigm”

Small Mixed: 1st) Rome “Grand Finale” (BV/BC/Overall Effect) 2nd) Chelsea “Out of the Blue” 3rd) Prattville “Spotlight”

Single-Gender: 1st) Homewood “Nexus” (BC/Overall Effect) 2nd) Tift County “Ladies Choice” 3rd) Tift County “Tiftosterone” (BV)

Homewood, like many years, walked into Albertville and completely decimated the competition. Its three groups took seven of the nine major captions available to them as well as all three division wins that they could. Network is again the group to beat in Alabama this year. However, Tift County really showed up as a program that can make real noise later in the season. ESSC took vocals in middle mixed and jumped Hoover, who they lost to last weekend. A week after Chelsea shocked many with a convincing small mixed win, Rome did that same thing this week. Grand Finale took all three captions for their first division win since Jasper last season. A final shoutout goes to Donelson Christian, who managed to crack the podium in their first competition in large mixed.

Bloomington Kennedy Gold

Final Results

GC: Hastings “Riverside Company” (BV/BC/BB)

1RU: Waconia “Power Company”

2RU: Wheaton Warrenville South “The Classics”

3RU: La Crosse “River City Revolution”

4RU: Bemidji “Vocalmotive”

5RU: Bloomington Jefferson “Jefferson Connection”

Despite a bit of a lower placement to start the season at Gretna two weeks ago, Hastings has firmly picked up where they left off at the end of 2024. Riverside Company took all three major captions from Waconia and essentially crowned themselves as Minnesota’s best (for this moment in time, at least). Both groups successfully defended their home territory from Wheaton Warrenville South. It’s certainly not a panic moment for Classics – the group hasn’t won its debut competition since 2022 and had successful seasons each of those years regardless. A bit lower down in finals, Bemidji took a nice head-to-head win against Bloomington Jefferson after Jefferson beat them at Hastings last year. Wheaton Warrenville South Esprit won the womens division over Hastings and Waconia.

Lincoln East Spartan Spectacular

Final Results

GC: Gretna East “Equinox” (BV/BC)

1RU: Elkhorn South “Blackout”

2RU: Pius X “Spectrum”

3RU: Papillion-La Vista South “Titanium“ (BB)

4RU: Norris “Gold“

5RU: Lincoln “Chain Reaction”

The lights shone brightly at Lincoln East as Gretna East stormed to its second win in three weeks. Equinox proved that the Gretna results weren’t just a fluke, as they beat a handful of the same groups for a second time. Elkhorn South took a nice step forward, as they ascended to second and beat Papio South for the first time in ten years. Pius, debuting their show for the year, showed that last year was no fluke for them either. Spectrum notched a very solid podium to begin their season. As for Papio South and Norris, there will just be days when a good show lands in fourth or fifth. That’s just the nature of tough competitions. Lincoln Chain Reaction had a mega prelims performance to break into finals, outclassing Papio South Titan Radiance and a motley mix of prep groups looking to make finals. Colten McCauley’s group made finals everywhere they went last year at some B-tier competitions, and now they’re finding success with the big dogs as well.

Wildcard: Omaha Westside Competition of Excellence

Final Results

GC: Millard West “West in the Groove” (BV/BB)

1RU: Mitchell “Friend de Coup” (BC)

2RU: Lincoln Southwest “Resonance”

3RU: Valley “Choralation”

4RU: Grand Island “Ultimate Image”

5RU: Millard West “Uptown”

Sometimes, waiting just a bit longer to debut in the season does pay off. The top two shows at Westside were both season debuts. WIG was impressive in their exhibition performance at Music Lives last week and came out firing on all cylinders this week. After questions dogged them during the offseason, Mitchell took a statement second place. FDC is very much still in the mix and will be competitive, even with a bit of a more local schedule this year than in years past. It’s hard to believe that Lincoln Southwest only has one more competition left this season. Their Grinch show has never fallen off the podium this year. Valley was the odd choir out in the top four, although that’s certainly not a slight to their program. Grand Island held steady to most predictions in fifth, while Millard West Uptown took the sixth finals spot over Bellevue East, Valley Ignition, and other hopefuls.
