A much-heralded battle was all that and more last weekend at Johnston. An anticipated matchup between Urbandale and Waukee also welcomed a third player, Prairie, into the conversation.
Womens Division
1st: Sioux Falls Roosevelt "Capitol Harmony"
2nd: Urbandale "Affinity"
Hollywood and fashion shows! What fun and fabulous themes these girls were performing. Sioux Falls Roosevelt brought style to their game on Saturday and placed first against the girls of Hollywood at Urbandale. That's two wins for Capitol Harmony, but Affinity will have another chance for gold at Waukee Northwest in a couple of weeks.
Prep Division
1st: Urbandale "Vitality"
2nd: Waukee "Spirit"
3rd: Prairie "Focal Point"
4th: Waukee Prairieview "Genesis"
Vitality may have not found Waldo, but they sure found the gold in their division! Spirit and Focal Point had excellent performances. It could have gone either way with these two groups, but Spirit outperformed Focal Point. Genesis from Waukee Prairieview had a taste of what the prep division was like at the high school level. They will be seen again along with Vitality and Spirit at Waukee Northwest for a rematch.
Final Results
Grand Champion: Urbandale "Studio" (BV/BC)
1RU: Prairie "The Ambassadors" (BB)
2RU: Waukee "Millennium"
3RU: Sioux Falls Roosevelt "Executive Suite"
4RU: Indianola "Side One"
5RU: Norwalk "Sound Revolution"
These groups did not show up to mess around. Each of them had a statement to make as they entered into finals. After missing finals last year, Norwalk stepped up their game and made sure they were one of the top six groups at Showzam. Indianola placed right above Norwalk with a solid fifth place finish. Sioux Falls Roosevelt felt like the wild card of this competition, traveling all the way from South Dakota to Iowa. Yet they showed up and placed fourth in prelims and finals, a statement to be made that they are a strong South Dakota group.
All eyes, however, were on the podium choirs: Millennium, The Ambassadors, and Studio. What was expected to be a match up between Studio and Millennium turned into a showdown between The Ambassadors and Studio. Waukee still gave it their all during their finals performance, but still fell short of Prairie, who took the band caption. Studio reigned as the victors of Showzam, swiping both Best Vocals and Best Choreography captions with them.
That's not the only time Waukee and Urbandale will meet this season. Waukee will have a second chance to prove themselves against Urbandale and Ankeny Centennial at Waukee Northwest on February 7, a contest that many are already looking forward to.
