The 2024 Southern show choir season will be underway as of this Saturday morning! While the Tallassee Capital City Classic is being covered in this week’s Comps of the Week, we’re going to cover the other two competitions that are taking place in the southern circuit: the Jackson Prep Show Choir Masters and the South Jones Invitational.
JACKSON PREP SHOW CHOIR MASTERS
10 years after its debut, the Jackson Prep Masters hosts a rematch of last year’s thriller. Like 2023, this competition seems to be Brandon’s to win, but Jackson Academy made sure to give them a run for their money in 2023, shockingly winning prelims as the underdog. That did, however, turn to a Brandon sweep during finals. Look for these two groups to start early and strong again this year. This competition also features Biloxi in the mix, who is looking to have a breakout season with their Mardi Gras-themed show. If there’s anything we learned from last year, no one can be left out of the conversation for number one, and Biloxi looks to make themselves no exception. While the single-gender division will be non-competitive for Brandon’s girls group, Bellas, small mixed will feature a three-way bout between Clinton Christian Academy, Columbia Academy, and Morton.
P.S.: This will not carry any implications to the results, but this competition will feature the first-ever implementation of Mississippi’s newly created Super Large Mixed Division. Brandon, Biloxi, and Jackson Academy will all be competing in the new division, which features choirs of more than 51 performers.
Predictions (five finalists):
GC) Brandon “Brio” (BV/BC/Show Design)
1RU) Jackson Academy “Encore”
2RU) Biloxi “Sound Surge”
3RU) Brandon “Bellas”
4RU) Clinton Christian Academy “Extreme”
5RU) Columbia Academy “Premiers”
2024 SOUTH JONES INVITATIONAL
Northwest Rankin will be looking to repeat last year’s showing at this same competition, where they earned the title of Grand Champion for their second time ever (and their first since stepping up to the Large Mixed Division). However, West Jones managed to snag the vocal caption at this competition last year, and they’ll be looking to do more this time around as they are predicted by the community as 1RU. Oak Grove will also be stepping up to the Large Mixed Division this year, and this will be their first showing since doing so, as they leave Northeast Jones and Sumrall to duke it out in the Middle Mixed Division. Small Division seems to be between West Marion New Era and Laurel Showstoppers, as Wayne County Orange Sensations and Pass Christian Luminary round out the bunch.
Predictions (no finals, overall placements):
1st) Northwest Rankin “The Ambassadors” (BV/BC/Show Design)
2nd) West Jones “Imagination”
3rd) Northeast Jones “Gold Horizons”
4th) Sumrall “Legacy”
5th) Oak Grove “Center Stage”
6th) West Marion “New Era”
While most of Mississppi's power players are on the sidelines this weekend, it will still be a great weekend for these groups!
