Comps of the Week Recap: 2/15/25
A pair of national powers extended their win streaks, while three more stepped up from previous runner-up finishes and another choir made a huge statement on debut for the season.
Center Grove Best of the Midwest
Large Mixed: 1st) Franklin Central “F.C. Singers” (BV/BC/BB) 2nd) Zionsville “Royalaires” 3rd) Fishers “Electrum” 4th) North Central “Counterpoints”
Large Womens: 1st) Fishers “Sound” (BV) 2nd) Franklin Central “High Voltage” (BC/BB) 3rd) Zionsville “Choralaires”
4th) North Central “Descants”
Small Mixed Winner: Roncalli “Royal Rhapsody”
Small Womens Winner: Cathedral “Irish Adrenaline”
Franklin Central took their moment in the spotlight, as they finally got away from competing against Center Grove and cleaned out the major captions. It’s the first win of the year for F.C. Singers, and a key one too. They’ll face Zionsville again in two weeks at Warren Central. Fishers, who hadn’t faced tough competition so far this year, made a good jump ahead of North Central in mixed. Large womens also featured some interesting placements. For the second weekend in a row, Fishers Sound won but dropped one of the major captions. Sound will look to hang on this upcoming weekend, where they face Center Grove Debtones, Carmel Accents, and Tupelo Synergy. High Voltage has now been second for three straight competitions. They, like FC Singers, will duel with Zionsville for the division win at Warren Central in two weeks. That division also overcame a power outage that happened in the middle of the Descants show. Roncalli swept in small mixed, beating Edgewood. Cathedral won the small womens division. They are now halfway to another undefeated season in the state of Indiana.

Final Results
Large Mixed: GC) Linn-Mar “10th Street Edition” (BV/BC/BB) 1RU) Carmel “Ambassadors” 2RU) Carroll “Magic” 3RU) Brandon “Brio” 4RU) Millard North “Infinity”
Large Single-Gender: GC) Carmel “Ambassadors” (BV/BC) 1RU) Millard North “Illumination” (BB) 2RU) Mt. Zion “Les Femmes”
Small Mixed: GC) Linn-Mar “In Step” (BV/BC/BB) 1RU) Danville “Delegation” 2RU) Millard North “Intensity” 3RU) Pike “Encores” 4RU) Bloomington “Amplitude”
Small Single-Gender: GC) Pike “Mystiques” (BC/BB) 1RU) Danville “Contemporaires” (BV) 2RU) Mother MacAuley “Mac Melody”
An eclectic (and electric) collection of choirs descended on northwest Indiana for an event of epic proportions. When it all settled, it was clear that Linn-Mar remains the class of the country. Their sweep was never really in doubt. In fact, the closest caption was probably the band caption. Carmel still gave it a great run with their Eldorado-themed show. Carroll exploded out of seemingly nowhere, going from local Fort Wayne competitions to showing up and showing out on a national stage. Brandon brought a big Southern flair to the competition, executing costume changes in nearly every song. Brio’s fourth place is the lowest for the group since they missed finals at Wheaton Warrenville South in 2019, but is among their most well-respected placements in national-level events. Millard North was also considered perhaps an underdog heading in but put itself solidly in the national conversation. Mt. Zion Swingsations was the lone large mixed group to miss finals. Millard North was also the busiest program of the day, with groups qualifying into three of the four finals rounds. A couple programs that had great days in the small divisions were Danville and Pike. Both Delegation and Contemporaires have put together solid seasons so far this season, and both were second. Pike Mystiques took home their first division title since 2014, and Encores were right behind a solid prep group in finals.
Homewood South Central Classic
Final Results
GC: Oak Mountain “Singers” (BC)
1RU: Petal “Soundsations”
2RU: Wheaton Warrenville South “The Classics” (BV)
3RU: Auburn “Varsity Singers”
4RU: Northwest Rankin “The Ambassadors”
Homewood delivered as always on both fronts of having a loaded lineup and having some kind of shenanigans happen during the competition. Finals were conducted in a rapid-fire fashion due to a line of severe thunderstorms that would’ve been in the area if the competition had run long. For a southern competition to run a no-boxes, no-backdrops, no-screens, few-props finals is almost unprecedented. Despite that, initial reviews on the concept have good returns, with observers noting that the quality of shows was not impacted. Oak Mountain was second in prelims but ascended to first in finals, taking another battle in what may be an emerging rivalry with Petal. Wheaton Warrenville South relied on its calling card, strong Midwest-style vocals, and was right in the mix as well. Auburn and Northwest Rankin both notched solid finals appearances. Enterprise was the first group out of finals, beating Spain Park. The womens division felt much like the mixed division, with Oak Mountain on top, Petal in second, and Wheaton in third.
Neosho The Sho
Final Results
GC: Troy Buchanan “Express” (BV/BC/BB)
1RU: Webb City “Singers”
2RU: Carthage “Soundwave”
3RU: Jenks “Trojanaires”
4RU: Webb City “Bella Voce”
5RU: Rock Bridge “City Lights”
While the book has not fully closed, the first chapter has been written. Isolated in eastern Missouri, Troy Buchanan is elite but does not see too many matchups with a rising western Missouri scene. This was an anticipated matchup, seeing if Webb City could match the level of Express. They couldn’t, at least not on Saturday. Even in a year with a director change, Troy Buchanan is still the class of the state… mostly. They’ll see Neosho at Mt. Zion on March 8 for what is a de facto Missouri state championship matchup. Carthage notched a nice podium placement, jumping Jenks after a previous matchup at Pleasant Hill. Rock Bridge was a pleasant surprise in finals. Long considered a vanguard of Missouri show choir, City Lights is on its third director in three years and had not made a finals appearance yet this year. They bounced both Joplin groups from finals, snapping an eight-competition finals streak for Sound Dimension.
Olentangy Keynote Classic
Final Results
GC: Marysville “Swingers Unlimited” (BV/BC)
1RU: Grove City “Touch of Class” (BB)
2RU: Loveland “By Request”
3RU: Beavercreek “Friends”
4RU: Findlay “First Edition”
5RU: Homestead “Class Royale”
Swingers Unlimited extended its win streak to five (and eight of the last nine), clearing yet another test of good Ohio choirs. Grove City may not be S-tier yet, but they are certainly consistently A-tier, putting themselves a step ahead of the rest. Loveland… tied its best placement of the season? However, this was a much stronger third for By Request than its third at Winfield. Beavercreek continues to have a solid season, as Friends have placed no lower than fourth in three appearances. It is their first head-to-head win against Findlay since 2016. First Edition is clearly still adjusting to an entirely new leadership team, but fifth here is certainly solid footing to move forward from. Grove City was also a step ahead of Loveland in the womens division, with Class Act taking all three major captions. In small mixed, Ravenswood took its first division win of the season. The field will now split, as Marysville and Loveland head to Ross this weekend while Findlay will compete at Grove City.
Urbandale Show Choir Invitational
Final Results
GC: Johnston “Innovation” (BV/BC)
1RU: Waukee “Millennium”
2RU: Mitchell “Friend de Coup”
3RU: Millard West “West in the Groove”
4RU: Waukee Northwest “Eos”
5RU: Broken Arrow “Tiger Rhythm” (BB)
Almost a month after being narrowly defeated in their first outing of the season, Johnston returned to the competition stage and won one of the most competitive events in the country. It was a well-rounded win, taking both the vocals and choreography captions. The group they lost to in January, Waukee Northwest, was fifth – the lowest placing in the group’s four-year competitive history. The second and third-place groups both have new directors this year, and the results for both Millennium and Friend de Coup will serve as banner placements as both groups being new eras. FDC jumped WIG after the two previously clashed at Omaha Westside two weekends ago. That’s a great sign of progress for the outfit as they grow under the new leadership of Nic Caberos. Broken Arrow rounded out finals. They were unable to jump any of the other varsity program but did take the band caption and mix it up with a handful of the nation’s best. Johnston also took some wins down the program, winning the prep and 9th grade divisions. Millard West took the womens division.
Most of these choirs will continue on their season, whether it be in the home stretch, the midseason, or still a bit of early-season action. Find out more on next week’s marquee lineups later this week!
