Capital City Classic Closes the Texas Season

Updated: Apr 4

By Kortney Minnick, Texas contributor

The Texas show choir season is winding down but going out with a bang this weekend at the Capital City Classic in Leander, just north of Austin. In a departure from the competition's traditional format, both middle schools and high schools will perform on Saturday and there will not be a finals round offered for the high schools.

Hosted by Rouse IntoneNation, this competition boasts two out of the top five groups in the state - Fort Worth Southwest Southwest Effect and Timber Creek Aerodynamix. Other regular competitors attending include Fort Worth Southwest Sound Machine and Cristo Rey Blazin' Blue.

Leander Legacy and Cedar Park Timberwolf Show Choir both hail from the same school district as Rouse and will make their usual appearances at Capital City. This is the only competition of the year for both groups. Hebron Harmony, a group from Carrollton, did not compete in any Dallas/Fort Worth-area competitions this year but will return to Rouse to defend their fourth-place showing last year. Whitehouse Top Cats, from the Tyler metro, will make its competitive debut after performing in exhibition at Lone Star last year.

Predictions going into the weekend are as follows:

GC: Fort Worth Southwest "Southwest Effect" (BC)

1RU: Timber Creek "Aerodynamix" (BV)

2RU: Hebron "Harmony!"

Last year, Southwest Effect led after prelims, but was passed by Keller Blue Lights in finals for the overall win. Similarly, Hebron led Timber Creek after prelims, but ADX completed the flip in finals for third.

None of the high school groups in attendance have ever won overall grand champion at a competition, meaning that the Texas scene is guaranteed to see a new winner at the end of the weekend.

On the middle school side of things, Timberview Ovation, Keller Legend and Trinity Springs Titanium are favorites for top three this weekend. Ovation and Titanum will be going head-to-head again this year for the top spot.

Keller Legend is hot this year, having an undefeated season thus far. Could Legend come in and win Capital City as well, ending their season undefeated, or will Titanium and Ovation maintain their streak of winning this competition?

Despite a smaller field this year, Capital City Classic will provide a great send-off to the season for every group in attendance.
